According to the US Department of Agriculture 30-40 percent of the food supply is wasted each year, amounting to 133 billion pounds of food waste. Pasquale Galante is a 78 year old SMC Student and wants to do something about that. He spends his time “rescuing” foods from restaurants that would otherwise be thrown out and donating it to people and places in need.

One such place is the SMC Bodega, which is a free food pantry for all SMC students. Learn more about the Bodega, where it gets its food, and the people working to stop food waste and get people the food they need.

As the semester comes to an end, we're flashing back to February where the Pan African Alliance and The Black Collegians hosted Hip Hop Trivia in honor of Black History Month. Staff Reporter Kollin Zullo talked to attendees to learn more about the event, as well as what Hip Hop means to them. Check out the video to learn more!

After losing their home in the Eaton fire, artist Camilla Taylor curated an exhibition made up of just artists whose houses have burned down. “My House Burned Down”, located at Track 16 in Downtown LA, hosts 8 different artists, 4 who lost their home in the recent LA fires and 4 who have lost their home from fires in the past. Taylor explores themes of loss, destruction and grief, as well as what happens when you have nothing left.

Santa Monica College (SMC) held a Coastal Cleanup day at their adopted historic beach, the “Inkwell”, on Sept. 20. Students gathered to pick up trash all along the beach, learn more about what makes up our trash and recycling, as well as the historical significance of the site.

SMC is hosting their annual Giving Thanksgiving this week! Students can still get free Thanksgiving groceries Monday and Tuesday Nov. 24 and 25, outside of the bodega on main campus from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m., all that you need is your student ID number. The program is also handing out $50 gift vouchers for Albertsons brand grocery stores as well as free socks and coats.

This is the 9th year of the event for SMC, put on by the SMC Foundation, and is open to all students regardless of financial status. Students can find fresh vegetables, canned goods, milk, eggs, pumpkin pie, and more. Corsair reporter Jenna Tibby stopped by on the first day of the event to learn more about it!

California is holding a statewide special election for Proposition 50. Prop 50 would allow the state to use new, legislatively drawn congressional district maps starting in 2026 through 2030. This measure is in response to Texas redistricting.

SMC held a Ballot Block Party event on Oct. 28 to spread awareness of the election as well as register voters. Students and staff could vote on site, as well as learn more about this years election.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and on Oct. 23 SMC’s Student Health Services set up a booth to provide students with statistics and information about breast cancer.
